Green Velvet Alocasia - Alocasia micholitziana ‘Frydrek’
Alocasia’s are distinctly uncommon houseplants. Frydrek, with its emerald velvet leaf and bright white veining contrast are no exception. Their stiff erect stems and large arrow shaped leaves can get up to 3ft tall.
The green of the leaf will darken over time to create even more of a contrast with the white veins making them stand out from your other houseplants.
- Grows 1 - 3 feet tall and wide. The leaves can grow 18cm long.
- Require less than 2 hours a day of direct light.
- Look super cute in Green Leaf Cement pots too.
Secrets of Success/Growing Details
Light: Indoors in the winter they like bright light in an east or north facing window. And for the summer a semi-shade spot works well.
Temperature & Humidity: Likes it warm, ideally 20℃, bring inside if the temperature is going below 15℃. They love an almost daily misting of water when the humidity is low.
Watering: Keep soil moist but not sopping wet, if it dries out too much the tips of the leaves will turn brown. Reduce watering in the winter.
Plant Nutrition: Feed regularly with a liquid kelp fertilizer like Garden Pro's all purpose 10-10-10. This means every 2 weeks in the spring and summer and then reducing it to once a month in the winter.
Repotting: Likes to be repotted every year early in the spring.
Special Problems: Brown tips, yellowing leaves and no new growth usually means the air is too dry . Solve this problem by using a small hand sprayer to mist the leaves daily or every second day. Crispy edged leaves can be too much direct sun, move into lower light.
